Charles Augustus Nichols (Obituary)
Charles Augustus Nichols was born June 11, 1936, to the late Willis Cullion and Eddie Beatrice Nichols, and was raised in a loving family as the third of six children. He accepted Christ as Savior and was a dedicated member of Centenary United Methodist Church for many years. He later served as a faithful member of Redeemed Church, where he supported the ministry in various roles and was instrumental in the construction of its new building in 2013. He departed this life on Sunday, July 13, 2025, after 89 blessed years.
He graduated from Hamilton High School, class of 1955. After graduating high school, he studied architectural design at Christan Brothers College and later served his country for two years in the US Army. Charles worked for the US Postal Service for 30+ years, until his retirement in 1996.
Charles married Phyllis Ann Hyter on June 7, 1964, and to this union was born son Joel. Charles and Phyllis celebrated 61 wonderful years of marriage, during which they enjoyed many family vacations, cruises, and trips abroad. Each year, the family traveled to various locations throughout the US, with some of his favorites including Yellowstone National Park, Niagara Falls, Mount Rushmore, and the Grand Canyon. Later trips with his wife and travel club included cruises to Mexico, Europe, and the Bahamas.
Charles was gifted with his hands and had a talent for building and construction. He loved woodwork and was known for his numerous home projects, such as bedroom additions, garage construction, home renovations, and much more. He also had a love for "all things outside," and could often be found helping neighbors with different tasks and working on special projects for the church whenever needed. Everyone who encountered "Pop" Nichols was blessed by his calm demeanor, kind words, and peaceful spirit.
Charles was proceeded in death by his parents and brothers Bertram Ronell Nichols, Willis Cullion III Nichols, Nathaniel McGhee Nichols, and Ernest Philip Nichols, and sister Ethel L. Bell-Garner. His memories will forever be cherished by his loving and devoted wife Phyllis Nichols, son Joel (Elizabeth) Nichols, grandchildren Jennifer Nichols, Charles (Jayla) Nichols, great-grandson Cayden Nichols, sister Cleo Marie (June) Deadmon, nephew Fruenze (LeTisa) Deadmon, niece Charisma (George) Price, niece Rosalyn Nichols, niece Rita Fields, nephew Randall Nichols, sister-in-law Florence Nichols, niece Yolanda Nichols, sister-in-law Shelia Nichols (Gary, IN), niece Rosita Bell, sister-in-law Shirley Nichols, nieces Angela Nichols, Dionne Nichols, and nephew Ernest Nichols III (St. Louis), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
